City of Clay is a proof of concept video game project using traditional mediums like clay, paper mache and acrylics to create a series of two sets each tackling an aspect of video game environmental design. Environmental Design focuses on telling a story in “a physical space in a cinematic way” (Environmental Narrative 12:36) through physical, visual and auditory details. Each set focuses on a different aspect of video game design, Set 1 focusing on a cinematic style animation through modular design and Set 2 focusing on a gameplay and UI based scene with layers of model making.
The story focuses around Phos, a young warrior prince who after the death of his mother goes on a journey to find his last remaining family and learn the truth behind her death. Along the way, he learns about the state of the world, his family's legacy and about his own identity as the heir of this world.
The project integrates physical media with digital photogrammetry to create the textural quality and aesthetic of clay while also utilising digital rendering programs to amplify the aesthetic through video editing and rendering programs.
